Graduate academic degrees are advanced studies in an academic discipline, and their purpose is imparting knowledge of the subject matter. Master’s academic degrees may be terminal in nature or may also provide an introduction to research and advanced study at the doctoral level. Academic degree programmes emphasize theory and are not primarily designed as preparation for professional careers. These degree programs may lead to research, thereby conferring the title of ‘doctor’. These courses prepare the student for a life of scholarship in an academic discipline, rather than specific applications of knowledge to professional practices. Moreover, students earning academic qualification do not often make use of the degree in their profession. On the other hand, professional qualification is the degree that fetches a job soon after its earning and decides the profession of the person for a lifetime. Examples of such degree courses are Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Science (M.Sc), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D), etc.
Professional degrees, on the other hand, are advanced studies in professional or vocational fields, and are designed to provide students with professional knowledge for application in professional practice. For example, the degree of M.D. is enough for a doctor to land in a job or to practice and earn his bread and butter. Similarly, a student completing his MBA becomes eligible to enter the administrative field in many industries, while a degree in law allows a person to become an advocate and practice law.
A doctorate in these studies is likewise practical, insofar as it prepares the student to pursue a particular profession. A few of the degrees that may be conferred upon the completion of a professionally oriented graduate programme are Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.), Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.), Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.), Master of Laws (LL.M.), Master of Architecture (M.Arch.), Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), Master of Education (M.Ed.), Master of Engineering (M.E.), Master of Laws (LL.M.), etc.
